At dawn on November 27, 1868, Lt. Col. George Custer's 7th Cavalry attacked Chief Black Kettle's sleeping Southern Cheyenne village on the Washita River, killing Black Kettle and many others, a controversial attack the Cheyenne remember as a massacre. The site tells both the Army's and the Cheyenne's stories.
Walk the trail overlooking the village site; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, walk the full interpretive trail and study this hard chapter of the Plains Indian wars from both perspectives.
