Fort Larned guarded the Santa Fe Trail from 1859 to 1878, protecting the great wagon road between Missouri and New Mexico and serving as an Indian agency under the Fort Wise Treaty. Its nine original stone buildings around the parade ground make it one of the best-preserved frontier posts in the country.

Peek into the barracks, bakery, and blockhouse and join living-history weekends. For a challenge, walk the full grounds and then follow the nearby swales left by Santa Fe Trail wagons.
