For 13,000 years, people dug rainbow-hued flint from these red bluffs above the Canadian River in the Texas Panhandle. Ice Age hunters of the Clovis culture shaped Alibates flint into spear points to hunt mammoths, and the stone was traded across the Great Plains and beyond. The quarry pits are visible only on ranger-led hikes.
Join the quarry hike and learn flintknapping basics at ranger programs. For a challenge, book the ranger-led trek up to the quarries themselves, a moderately strenuous walk to the ancient pits.
