Capulin Volcano Visitor Center
Address: 46 Volcano Highway, Capulin, NM 88414
Capulin Volcano is a textbook cinder cone rising 1,300 feet above the plains of northeastern New Mexico, born in a single eruption about 60,000 years ago and still showing its perfect symmetry and crater. A road spirals to the rim for views into five states across the Raton-Clayton volcanic field.
Walk the paved Crater Rim Trail and peer into the vent; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, hike both rim and vent trails and descend the steep Lava Flow Trail at the volcano's base.
