On May 10, 1869, the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads met at Promontory Summit, Utah, and a ceremonial golden spike completed the first transcontinental railroad, binding the continent and shrinking a months-long journey to a week. Working replicas of the Jupiter and No. 119 steam locomotives meet on the rebuilt track each summer.
Watch the steam engines face off and help reenact the ceremony; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, drive the old railroad grades and walk the original Big Fill trestle site.
