Address: Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve, 1266 Craters Loop Road, Arco, ID 83213
Craters of the Moon is a vast lava field on Idaho's Snake River Plain, where eruptions between 15,000 and 2,100 years ago left cinder cones, spatter cones, and lava tube caves across a stark landscape that Apollo astronauts once used for geology training.
Climb Inferno Cone for a summit view and explore the Indian Tunnel lava tube by flashlight. For a challenge, tackle the rugged Broken Top Loop across the lava, or backpack the wilderness trail into the monument's roadless interior.
