On May 14, 1961, a mob firebombed the Freedom Riders' bus outside Anniston, Alabama, and beat the riders as they escaped the flames; images of the burning bus shocked the nation and forced the federal government to enforce desegregation of interstate travel. The monument preserves the bus burning site and Anniston's former segregated bus station.
