A.G. Gaston Motel
Address: 1510 5th Ave N, Birmingham, AL 35203
Birmingham was the battleground of the 1963 campaign that broke segregation's back: the Children's Crusade, when students filled the jails; fire hoses and police dogs in Kelly Ingram Park; King's 'Letter from Birmingham Jail'; and the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church that killed four girls. The monument spans the A.G. Gaston Motel, the church, and the park.
Walk Kelly Ingram Park's sculpture trail and visit the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and the 16th Street Baptist Church. For a challenge, walk the full Civil Rights District on foot, taking in every site in one long reflective day.
