Fort Bowie National Historic Site Visitor Center
Address: 3327 S Old Fort Bowie Rd, Bowie, AZ 85605
Fort Bowie guarded Apache Spring in southeastern Arizona through 25 years of war with the Chiricahua Apaches under Cochise and Geronimo, from the 1862 Battle of Apache Pass to Geronimo's final surrender in 1886. Reaching the ruins means walking a 1.5-mile trail past the spring, a Butterfield stage stop ruin, and Apache camp sites.
Walk the trail in past Apache Spring to the fort's adobe ruins; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, extend the hike into the rugged hills of Apache Pass beyond the fort.
