Address: 26 Jim Bradford Trail, Mimbres, NM 88049

In the 1280s, Mogollon families built about 40 rooms inside five natural caves high in the canyon walls of the Gila Wilderness and left within a generation, leaving dwellings, tools, and even corncobs that survive in the dry alcoves. The monument sits deep in the world's first designated wilderness area.

Climb the one-mile loop trail right into the ancient rooms; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, soak in the nearby wilderness hot springs or backpack the rugged Middle Fork of the Gila.
