Chiricahua protects a wonderland of rhyolite hoodoos and balancing rocks in southeastern Arizona, carved from ash deposited by a volcanic eruption about 27 million years ago. The monument also preserves Faraway Ranch, homesteaded by Swedish immigrants Neil and Emma Erickson.
Weave through the rock grottoes of Echo Canyon and visit Faraway Ranch on ranger tours. For a challenge, take on the Big Loop, an 8-plus mile circuit through Echo Canyon and the Heart of Rocks with over 1,700 feet of climbing.
