About 68,000 years ago a nursery herd of Columbian mammoths, mothers and calves, drowned in a flash flood on a Texas creek, and their bones still lie in place where they fell: 24 mammoths, a camel, and a saber-toothed cat make this the nation's largest known mammoth nursery herd.
Walk the climate-controlled dig shelter over the actual fossil beds; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, take the guided tour deep into the excavation's story and geology, then walk the monument's nature trails.
