Four great Spanish colonial missions, Concepcion, San Jose, San Juan, and Espada, line the San Antonio River south of the Alamo, founded in the 1700s as walled communities where Coahuiltecan peoples and Spanish friars built a new world together; with the Alamo they form a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Bike the Mission Reach trail between the missions and study the frescoes at San Jose; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, walk or ride the full 15-mile mission-to-mission trail in one day.
