The Big Thicket is a biological crossroads where Southeast swamps, Eastern forests, and Western plains collide, sheltering carnivorous plants, orchids, alligators, and legendary tales of outlaws and wild men; a UNESCO biosphere reserve, one of America's first national preserves (1974).

Walk the Kirby Nature Trail, paddle the calm Village Creek, and hunt for pitcher plants. For a challenge, kayak the Neches River corridor or hike deep into the backcountry units.
