Johnstown Flood National Memorial Visitor Center
Address: 733 Lake Road, South Fork, PA 15956
On May 31, 1889, the neglected South Fork Dam, owned by a private club of wealthy Pittsburgh industrialists, burst and sent a wall of water down the valley that killed more than 2,200 people in Johnstown, one of the worst disasters in American history. The memorial preserves the dam ruins, the club's surviving buildings, and the lakebed.
See the visitor center's powerful film and look down the breached dam from the overlooks. For a challenge, walk the trails down into the dam's stone breach itself, where the flood began.
