Address: 5831 Dunker Church Road, Sharpsburg, MD 21782

On September 17, 1862, the fields along Antietam Creek saw the bloodiest single day in American history, some 23,000 casualties in twelve hours, in a battle that ended Lee's first invasion of the North and gave Lincoln the ground to issue the Emancipation Proclamation.

See the Dunker Church, cross Burnside Bridge, and drive the tour road; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, walk the battlefield's trail network end to end, from the Cornfield through Bloody Lane to the Final Attack site.
