Indiana Dunes Visitor Center (Dorothy Buell Memorial Visitor Center)

Address: 1215 IN-49, Porter, IN 46304

America's 61st national park protects 15 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline where wind and waves built some of the most biodiverse dunes in the National Park System, saved from industry by a citizen campaign led by the Save the Dunes Council. Marshes, bogs, prairies, and oak savannas crowd the dune ridges.

Swim and play on the beaches, climb the Dune Succession Trail stairs, and bird the marshes; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, hike the Cowles Bog Trail, a strenuous 4.7-mile loop through a National Natural Landmark wetland to the beach.
