Thousand Springs Visitor Center
Address: 17970 U.S. Hwy 30, Hagerman, ID 83332
Hagerman protects one of the richest Pliocene fossil deposits known, where sediments 3 to 4 million years old along the Snake River have yielded over 200 species, most famously the Hagerman horse, Equus simplicidens, found here in the largest concentration anywhere. The Oregon Trail also crosses the monument, its wagon ruts still visible.
See fossil skulls at the visitor center and stand in real Oregon Trail ruts. For a challenge, hike the full trails along the fossil bluffs for wide views over the Snake River plain.
