The Battle of Shiloh, April 6-7, 1862, was the war's first horrifically bloody battle, 23,000 casualties in two days of fighting around a country church, Bloody Pond, and the Hornet's Nest; Grant's victory opened the Deep South. The Corinth battlefield unit preserves the railroad-crossing siege that followed.
