Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park Visitor Center
Address: Highway 160, Honaunau, HI 96726
For centuries, Hawaiians who broke a sacred kapu law could escape death by reaching this place of refuge, where priests absolved them; the great stone wall, the reconstructed Hale o Keawe temple holding the bones of chiefs, and fierce wooden kii images still guard the shore.
Walk the royal grounds, see the fishponds and temple platform, and watch sea turtles on the lava shore; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, walk the full 1871 Trail along the coast past ancient village sites and lava sledding tracks.
