Kaloko-Honokohau preserves the Honokohau Settlement, a National Historic Landmark where Native Hawaiians built massive fishpond walls, fish traps, house platforms, and heiau along the Kona coast. Restored loko ia (fishponds) still trap fish as they did centuries ago, and endangered Hawaiian waterbirds feed in the wetlands while green sea turtles rest on the beach.

Watch honu (green sea turtles) in the shallows and walk the ancient fishpond walls. For a challenge, hike the coastal trail across the 1801 lava flow, tracing the full settlement on foot.
