Address: 92-7400 Mamalahoa Highway, Ocean View, HI 96722

Hawaii Volcanoes protects two of the world's great volcanoes: Kilauea, among the most active on Earth, and Mauna Loa, the largest shield volcano on the planet at 13,679 feet. Lava has built new land here for centuries, and the park shelters native rainforest and the nene, Hawaii's state bird.

Walk through the Nahuku lava tube, peer into Halemaumau crater, and drive Chain of Craters Road to the sea; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, experienced backpackers can take on the Mauna Loa Trail, a multi-day climb over raw lava to the summit cabin.
