Address: Bear Valley Visitor Center, 1 Bear Valley Road, Point Reyes Station, CA 94956
Point Reyes is a windswept peninsula north of San Francisco where the San Andreas Fault separates land crawling north on the Pacific Plate from the mainland. It is the homeland of the Coast Miwok, a likely landing place of Francis Drake in 1579, and a refuge for tule elk, elephant seals, and migrating gray whales.
Walk the Earthquake Trail along the fault, count the 313 steps down to the 1870 lighthouse, and watch seals and elk. For a challenge, hike the full 9.4-mile round trip to Tomales Point through the tule elk reserve.
