Address: Muir Woods Visitor Center, 1 Muir Woods Rd, Mill Valley, CA 94941

Muir Woods protects one of the last ancient coast redwood groves in the Bay Area, saved in 1908 when Congressman William Kent donated the land and asked that it honor John Muir; trees here rise over 250 feet and have stood for nearly a thousand years. In 1945, delegates from the new United Nations gathered in the grove to honor Franklin Roosevelt.

Walk the flat main trail under the giant trees; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, climb the steep hillside trails up into Mount Tamalpais above the fog.
