Fort Point National Historic Site

Address: San Francisco, CA 94129

Fort Point, a massive brick-and-granite Civil War-era seacoast fort, was built from 1853 to 1861 to guard San Francisco Bay, and the Golden Gate Bridge was deliberately arched over it in 1937 to save it. Spanish soldiers first fortified the point in 1794.

Climb the fort's spiral granite stairs, watch surfers below the bridge, and walk out onto the Golden Gate Bridge from the fort. For a challenge, explore the Presidio's coastal batteries along the bluffs on foot, linking Fort Point to the bridge and beyond.
