Ocmulgee Mounds Visitor Center
Address: 1207 Emery Hwy, Macon, GA 31217
Ocmulgee preserves 12,000 years of continuous human history in Macon, Georgia, crowned by the great temple mounds raised around 1000 CE by the Mississippian culture, ancestors of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. Visitors can enter the Earth Lodge, a reconstructed council chamber with its original 1,000-year-old clay floor and bird-shaped platform.
Climb the Great Temple Mound, step inside the Earth Lodge, and visit the museum's artifacts; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, hike the full mound and battlefield trail network through the old Creek homelands.
