Township Hall and Visitor Center
Address: 304 Washington Ave, Nicodemus, KS 67625
Nicodemus, Kansas is the only remaining western town founded by African Americans during Reconstruction, settled in 1877 by Black families seeking land and freedom after the Civil War. The site preserves five historic buildings, including the Township Hall, the African Methodist Episcopal Church, and the First Baptist Church.
Take the walking tour of the historic buildings and explore the exhibits and archives in Township Hall; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, walk the whole township site and dig into the archives to trace individual settler families' stories.
