On November 29, 1864, U.S. volunteer cavalry attacked a peaceful camp of about 750 Cheyenne and Arapaho people here, killing more than 200, most of them women, children, and elders, even as the camp flew an American flag. The massacre deepened a generation of war on the plains and remains sacred ground to the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes.
Walk the bluff trail overlooking the site and learn the story at the visitor contact station. For a challenge, walk the full Monument Hill trail and spend time at the overlook, where descendants still come to mourn and remember.
