Gutzon Borglum and 400 workers carved the 60-foot faces of Washington, Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Lincoln into the Black Hills granite from 1927 to 1941, a 'Shrine of Democracy' blasted out with dynamite on land the Lakota hold sacred as the Six Grandfathers.

Walk the Presidential Trail beneath the faces and visit the sculptor's studio; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, stay for the evening lighting ceremony after hiking the trail for the close-up view of Borglum's models and the Hall of Records.
