Address: 5201 Urbana Pike, Frederick, MD 21704

On July 9, 1864, at the Monocacy River south of Frederick, Maryland, a small Union force under Lew Wallace lost a battle to Jubal Early's Confederates but delayed them just long enough for reinforcements to reach Washington, earning Monocacy the name 'the battle that saved Washington.'

Watch the visitor center's electric map program and walk the short battlefield loops. For a challenge, hike the battlefield's full trail network past the Worthington and Thomas farms where the hardest fighting raged.
