Catoctin Mountain Park occupies the easternmost ridge of the Blue Ridge in Maryland, where New Deal-era CCC crews built rustic cabins in forest long used for charcoal iron furnaces. The presidential retreat Camp David sits within the park, closed to the public, but 25 miles of trails climb to overlooks like Chimney Rock and Wolf Rock.

Hike to the rock outcrops, fish for trout, and join ranger programs. For a challenge, take on the classic 8.5-mile loop linking Thurmont Vista, Wolf Rock, and Chimney Rock.
