Lindenwald, in Kinderhook, New York, was the 36-room mansion and farm of Martin Van Buren, eighth president, architect of the Democratic Party, and the first president born an American citizen. He ran two presidential campaigns from this house, including his 1848 Free Soil run against the spread of slavery.
