Address: 2 Mark Bird Lane, Elverson, PA 19520

Hopewell Furnace is a restored 19th-century rural iron plantation in Pennsylvania, built around a charcoal-fired cold-blast furnace founded about 1771 by ironmaster Mark Bird, whose iron supplied the Revolutionary cause. The village preserves the furnace group, water wheel, cast house, ironmaster's mansion, company store, and workers' houses.

Watch the water wheel turn, meet the farm animals, and see molding and blacksmithing demonstrations; young kids love the animals best. For a challenge, time a visit for a live charcoal burn or iron-casting demonstration and work through the whole 18th-century ironmaking process in one day.
