Address: 535 Hampton Lane, Towson, MD 21286
Hampton was the grandest estate in early America: its 1790 Georgian mansion was the largest private home in the young nation, seat of the Ridgely family's ironworks and 25,000 acres worked by hundreds of enslaved people, whose stone quarters still stand beside the gardens.
Tour the great mansion, see the slave quarters and farm buildings, and walk the gardens; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, take the full ranger tours that honestly trace both the Ridgelys' grandeur and the lives of the enslaved and indentured workers.
