Herbert Hoover, the 31st president, was born in 1874 in a two-room cottage in West Branch, Iowa, the son of a Quaker blacksmith. The site preserves his birthplace cottage, his father's blacksmith shop, the Quaker meetinghouse, his presidential library and museum, and his gravesite above a restored tallgrass prairie.

Peek into the tiny birthplace cottage, watch blacksmithing demonstrations, and walk the prairie trails. For a challenge, work through the full presidential museum and hike the 81-acre prairie restoration, a National Recreation Trail.
