El Morro's great sandstone bluff and its dependable waterhole drew travelers for a thousand years: Ancestral Puebloans built the Atsinna pueblo on its summit around 1275, and Spanish governors, American soldiers, and wagon pioneers carved more than 2,000 names and messages into the rock, the West's most famous register of inscriptions.
Hunt for the oldest carvings along the Inscription Trail; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, hike the full Headland Trail to the pueblo ruins atop the mesa.
