Fort Scott stood on the edge of settlement in the 1840s and 1850s, a base for the Army during the years of Bleeding Kansas and westward expansion, and later a Civil War supply depot. Twenty restored structures ring the parade ground, from officers' quarters to the hospital and guardhouse.

Explore the barracks and stables and watch artillery demonstrations in season; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, take the full self-guided tour of all twenty buildings, one of the most complete frontier forts anywhere.
