Fort Davis is one of the best-preserved frontier Army posts in the Southwest, guarding the San Antonio-El Paso road through the Davis Mountains from 1854 to 1891. Buffalo Soldiers of the Black cavalry and infantry regiments served here through the Apache wars. More than 50 buildings and ruins ring the parade ground, and recorded bugle calls still sound across the post.

Explore the barracks and hospital and hear the bugle calls; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, hike the trails from the fort up into the Davis Mountains for the soldiers'-eye view of the post.
