Beneath the Guadalupe Mountains lies Carlsbad Cavern, dissolved out of a 250-million-year-old fossil reef by sulfuric acid rising from below, a rare way for caves to form that created rooms like the Big Room, one of the largest cave chambers in North America.
Descend through the Natural Entrance into a world of giant formations and watch the summer evening bat flight out of the cave mouth; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, book a ranger-led crawling tour into undeveloped caves like Spider Cave or Lower Cave.
