Between 850 and 1150 AD, Chaco Canyon was the ceremonial heart of the Ancestral Puebloan world: massive great houses like Pueblo Bonito rose four stories high, aligned to the sun and moon, linked by engineered roads across the San Juan Basin. It remains the most important archaeological site in the American Southwest and a sacred place for modern Pueblos and the Navajo Nation.

Walk inside Pueblo Bonito's ancient walls and explore the canyon's great houses; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, hike the mesa-top trail above the canyon to see the great houses and roads from above.
