Mesa Verde Museum

Address: Mesa Verde Museum, Mesa Verde National Park, CO 81330

Mesa Verde protects nearly 5,000 archaeological sites including 600 cliff dwellings, the great stone villages like Cliff Palace that Ancestral Puebloans built into canyon alcoves in the 1200s and mysteriously left within a century. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Colorado's only one.

Climb ladders into Cliff Palace on a ranger tour and see the mesa-top pueblos; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, book the ranger-led tour to Balcony House, climbed by ladders and a crawl-through tunnel.
