Valles Caldera is a 13.7-mile-wide volcanic caldera in New Mexico's Jemez Mountains, formed by eruptions about 1.25 million years ago, with lava domes, hot springs, fumaroles, and vast grass valleys grazed by one of New Mexico's largest elk herds.

Spot elk in Valle Grande, fish clear trout streams, and join ranger programs; young kids enjoy the easy valley trails. For a challenge, make the long climb up Redondo Peak, the 11,254-foot resurgent dome at the caldera's heart.
