Abó Visitor Center

At Quarai, Abo, and Gran Quivira east of the Manzano Mountains, great red and gray stone mission churches rose beside thriving Pueblo communities in the 1600s, a brief collision of Spanish friars and Puebloan farmers that famine, drought, and revolt ended by the 1670s. The ruins stand stark and beautiful on the salt-flat plains.
Wander the roofless church walls and kivas at all three sites; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, walk all three unit trails and study how two cultures met and clashed here.
