Great Island Cabin Office

Address: Great Island, South Core Banks, NC 28531

Cape Lookout protects 56 wild miles of the southern Outer Banks, reachable only by boat: the black-and-white diamond Cape Lookout Lighthouse, the abandoned whaling villages of Portsmouth and Cape Lookout, and the wild horses of Shackleford Banks, said to descend from Spanish stock.

Climb the lighthouse, look for the banker ponies on Shackleford Banks, and camp on the empty beach. For a challenge, take the ferry to remote Portsmouth Village or kayak the uninhabited Core Banks.
