Fort Raleigh preserves the site of the Roanoke Colony, England's first settlement in America, including the 1587 colony whose fate remains the famous mystery of the 'Lost Colony' and the birthplace of Virginia Dare, the first English child born in the New World. During the Civil War, a Freedmen's Colony for escaped slaves thrived on the same ground.
