Marcus and Narcissa Whitman founded a mission to the Cayuse at Waiilatpu in 1836, which became a crucial Oregon Trail station; in 1847, after a measles epidemic killed Cayuse children, Cayuse men killed the Whitmans and eleven others, an event that helped bring Oregon Territory under U.S. control.

Walk the mission grounds, see the great grave and memorial hill, and visit the museum; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, walk the full grounds and study the site's telling of both cultures' tragedy.
