Tonto protects two well-preserved cliff dwellings built by the Salado people around 700 years ago in the cliffs above the Salt River Valley, on the edge of the Sonoran Desert. The Lower Cliff Dwelling is reached by a steep but paved half-mile trail, and the visitor center displays Salado pottery and textiles excavated nearby.

Walk the short trail to the Lower Cliff Dwelling and see the Salado pottery in the visitor center; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, reserve the guided hike to the Upper Cliff Dwelling, a strenuous 3-mile round trip offered seasonally.
