Sunset Crater Volcano Visitor Center
Address: 6082 Sunset Crater Road, Flagstaff, AZ 86004
Around 1085 AD, Sunset Crater erupted in a fiery fountain that blanketed 800 square miles in ash and cinders, the youngest volcano in Arizona's San Francisco volcanic field; its cinders still glow red at sunset. The eruption transformed life for the Sinagua people who farmed the newly fertile ash.
Walk the one-mile Lava Flow Trail across the jagged Bonito flow; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, hike the steep cinder trail up nearby Lenox Crater, since Sunset Crater's own summit is closed to protect the fragile cone.
