Scotts Bluff National Monument Visitor Center

Address: 190276 Old Oregon Trail, Gering, NE 69341

Scotts Bluff was the great landmark of the Oregon, California, and Mormon Trails, named for fur company clerk Hiram Scott, who died near it in 1828. Emigrant wagon ruts still cut through Mitchell Pass below the bluffs.

Stand in real wagon ruts and ride the summit road through its three tunnels; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, hike the Saddle Rock Trail from the visitor center to the 800-foot summit for the emigrants' own view down the North Platte valley.
