Address: 26876 Mulholland Highway, Calabasas, CA 91302

The Santa Monica Mountains rise straight from the Pacific at the edge of Los Angeles, one of the most-visited natural areas in California, with beaches, oak woodlands, and peaks lifted by the Raymond Fault that hold fossils of ancient sea life.

Tidepool at the beaches, hike to waterfalls, and join ranger programs in the hills above Malibu. For a challenge, climb Sandstone Peak, the range's 3,111-foot high point, or string together a long stretch of the 67-mile Backbone Trail.
